Meta Ads vs Google Ads: which one should a small business start with?

Both platforms work, but they catch customers at different moments. Choosing the right one first saves money.

Google Ads: people who are already searching

Google shows your ad when someone searches for what you sell. The need already exists, so these clicks are often close to buying. It suits urgent services like repairs, ticketing, clinics and suppliers, and products people look up by name.

Meta Ads: people who have not searched yet

Facebook and Instagram show your ad to people who match an audience, while they scroll. It suits products and offers people discover by seeing them: fashion, food, events, new launches and local services with a strong visual.

Which one to start with

  • People already search for your service: start with Google Ads
  • You need to create demand or show a product: start with Meta Ads
  • You sell on WhatsApp: test click-to-WhatsApp ads on Meta
  • Small budget: pick one platform and do it well before adding the second

Measure before you scale

Whatever you choose, set up conversion tracking first: calls, forms, WhatsApp clicks and sales. Without it you only see clicks, not customers, and you cannot tell which ads are worth more budget.

Using both together

Many businesses end up running both. Google captures demand, and Meta retargets visitors who did not buy the first time, often with an offer or a reminder.
